EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photographic print depicting a Tatar woman from the Khivinka region of the Russian Empire, taken by the renowned ethnographer Karlis Huns for the seminal work "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia). Published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to commemorate the millennium of the Russian Empire, this two-volume set was dedicated to Tsar Alexander II and aimed to provide a comprehensive ethnographic and historical record of the diverse population of the empire. Volume 1 of this groundbreaking work consists of 62 color illustrations, including this striking image of a Tatar woman from Bukharka, Khivinka. The photograph is part of a larger album that showcases the traditional attire of various ethnic groups inhabiting the Russian Empire. Accompanying the images is a fold-out table detailing the size of the populations of these groups in major cities, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map. The work was the brainchild of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia. Pauli's meticulous research and dedication to documenting the rich cultural heritage of the Russian Empire resulted in a detailed and insightful record of the ethnic groups and their way of life during the 1860s. This photograph of the Tatar woman from Bukharka, Khivinka, is a testament to the invaluable contribution of Pauli and his team to the field of ethnography and the preservation of historical records.
