A British Position on the River Tigris, (1919). Creator: Unknown
A British Position on the River Tigris, (1919). Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: Photograph by a British airman, showing one of the important points in the line of advance on Baghdad [in modern-day Iraq] up the valley of the Tigris. Along the banks...are numerous patches of cultivated gardens and villages within high mud-wall enclosures, belts of date-palms, with an occasional fringe of willow, which in the rainy season become mere oases in a vast inland sea. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. V, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "A British Position on the River Tigris, (1919)", offers a unique glimpse into a significant moment during the First World War. Taken by an anonymous British airman, this aerial view showcases one of the crucial points in the advance towards Baghdad along the valley of the Tigris River in modern-day Iraq. The image reveals a striking contrast between patches of cultivated gardens and villages enclosed within high mud walls against a backdrop of vast stretches of uninhabited land. The riverbanks are adorned with belts of date-palms, occasionally accompanied by fringes of willow trees that transform into oases during rainy seasons. This monochrome snapshot captures both the beauty and desolation found in this Middle Eastern landscape. Published in W. Stanley Macbean Knight's comprehensive book "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", this photograph provides valuable insight into not only geographical features but also highlights how nature intertwines with human conflict. It serves as a reminder that even amidst war, life continues to flourish. As we observe this historical scene from above, it is impossible not to ponder upon the resilience displayed by both man-made structures and natural elements alike. This powerful image invites us to reflect on our connection to our surroundings while appreciating those who fought bravely for their respective nations during this tumultuous period in history.
