The Bowling-Green and Marketfield-Street, 1845. Creator: Unknown

The Bowling-Green and Marketfield-Street, 1845. Fire in New York City. The fire then proceeded eastward along the middle of the block between Marketfieid and Stone, until it burst into Stone-street...Three hundred buildings according to the best calculation, have been levelled to the ground. Most of them were large three, four, and five story houses, and occupied principally by importing and other merchants. It is a close estimate to set the loss at from five to ten millions of dollars. The Bowling-Green and Marketfield-Street, 1845 - A Glimpse into the Aftermath of a Devastating Fire in New York City

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the year 1845, capturing a haunting scene that unfolded on the streets of New York City. The image showcases the aftermath of a destructive fire that ravaged through the heart of this bustling metropolis. As we gaze upon this engraving from "Illustrated London News" we witness a cityscape engulfed in chaos and destruction. The flames have left behind nothing but ruins and rubble, with three hundred buildings reduced to ashes. Among these structures were grand three, four, and five-story houses that once housed prominent importing and other merchants. The impact of this catastrophe was not only measured in terms of physical damage but also human suffering. Homelessness became an unfortunate reality for many as their homes turned to ash before their eyes. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life's belongings and how swiftly they can be lost. While it is impossible to quantify the true extent of loss, estimates place it between five to ten million dollars - an astronomical figure for its time. This historic photograph provides us with valuable insight into nineteenth-century New York City's resilience in face adversity. Through this visual window into history, we are reminded both of our vulnerability as well as our capacity for rebuilding after disaster strikes.
