Bow-Wow!!, 1859

Bow-Wow!!, 1859. Rumours of the invasion of Britain by France abounded. The French press reported extensively that Britain was in fact preparing to take the offensive and that In that country which holds war in so much abhorrence, they are now making a hundred thousand rifles, and everybody is learning to use them. Mr Punch considered such reports to be so much Bow-wow. Here, the British lion sits majestically on British soil. There is a flotilla of boats on the sea beneath him. On the other side of the Channel, Napoleon thrusts forward a yapping poodle which is balanced on a pair of bellows, no doubt issuing forth nothing but hot air. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 19, 1859

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 19th-century print titled "Bow-Wow!!, 1859" we witness a satirical depiction of the political tensions between Britain and France during that time. The image, originally published in Punch, or the London Charivari on November 19,1859, showcases the British lion seated regally on its own soil. The English Channel separates the two nations, symbolizing their geographical divide. On one side stands the majestic British lion while a flotilla of boats floats beneath it. Across the channel, Napoleon Bonaparte III is portrayed as a yapping poodle balanced precariously on a pair of bellows. This clever representation suggests that his threats and claims are nothing but hot air. The cartoon reflects rumors circulating at that period about an impending French invasion of Britain. However, Mr Punch dismisses these reports as mere "Bow-wow". It highlights how exaggerated and unfounded such claims were by contrasting them with reality. This monochrome engraving captures not only historical events but also social commentary through visual satire. It serves as a reminder of the power dynamics and political rivalries prevalent during this era. As we observe this remarkable piece from Heritage Images' collection, we are transported back to an intriguing moment in history when politics and international relations played out through artistry and wit.
