EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of Bonner, a prominent figure in British history during the 16th century. The creator of this intriguing portrait remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to the subject's already controversial reputation. Edmund Bonner, born around 1500 and passing away in 1569, held the influential position of Bishop of London not once but twice. Educated at Pembroke College, Oxford, he became infamous for his involvement in persecuting heretics under Queen Mary I's Catholic government. Known as "Bloody Bonner" his actions during this period were marked by religious intolerance and cruelty. The engraving featured here is part of Alfred Howard's "Biographical Illustrations" published in 1830 by Thomas Tegg, R. Griffin and Co. , J. Cumming in London, Glasgow, and Dublin. It offers us a glimpse into Bonner's appearance with its detailed depiction of his clothing—a coat befitting a man of high stature within the church. Despite being just one person captured within this frame, Bonner's historical significance cannot be understated. This photograph serves as a reminder that even centuries later we can still explore and reflect upon complex figures who have shaped our world through their actions—both admirable and condemnable alike.
