EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dignified presence of Bishop Thomas Ken, an influential 17th-century English cleric. Taken in the late 19th or early 20th century, this image showcases Bishop Ken's head and shoulders, highlighting his distinctive attire as a bishop. Born in 1637, Thomas Ken rose to prominence when he became the Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1684. However, his refusal to swear allegiance to William III and Mary after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 led to his deposition from his position along with eight other nonjuring bishops in 1690. In this portrait, we see a man who stood firmly by his principles despite facing consequences for it. His commitment to religious beliefs is evident through his cassock, symbolizing his role as a clergyman within the Christian faith. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and timelessness to this image, allowing us to glimpse into England's history during the Stuart era. As we observe Bishop Thomas Ken's resolute expression, we are reminded of the turbulent times he lived through - a period marked by rebellion and revolution. Preserved on a lantern slide for generations to come, this portrait serves as a testament not only to Bishop Ken's individuality but also to the broader struggles faced by those who dared challenge authority during significant historical moments like the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
