EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historical beauty of Bermondsey Abbey in 1790. The creator of this remarkable image remains unknown, but their talent for architectural photography is evident. Bermondsey Abbey, once an English Benedictine monastery located in Southwark, London, held great significance during its time. However, by the 19th century, both the abbey and the house built on its grounds by Thomas Pope had vanished. The photograph comes from a publication called "Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, And Its Places". This volume was written by Edward Walford and published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. , which were renowned publishers at that time. The monochrome composition emphasizes the grandeur of this religious ruin set against a picturesque landscape. It serves as a testament to Britain's rich history and cultural heritage. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back to a different era when occupation and profession intertwined with religion. Thanks to Heritage Images' preservation efforts, we can still appreciate these glimpses into our past. This print reminds us of the importance of cherishing our architectural treasures while also acknowledging how they shape our present-day cityscape.
