EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Battle of Jena, Germany, which took place on the 14th of October in 1806. Painted by Edme Bovinet, it vividly depicts the intense clash between Marshal Lannes' corps and General Friedrich Hohenloe's Prussian force. The battle commenced unexpectedly when these two forces encountered each other during an evening meeting. Under Napoleon's command, a general advance was ordered at 1 pm. Within just two hours, the exhausted Prussians were overwhelmed and forced to retreat from the field. Desperate to escape the sabres of Marshal Murat's horsemen, they fled in disarray. However, victory came at a cost for Bonaparte as he lost around 5,000 men while inflicting staggering casualties of approximately 25,000 on his Prussian adversaries. The artwork beautifully portrays this significant moment in history with its vibrant colors and attention to detail. It showcases not only the bravery and determination of soldiers engaged in combat but also highlights the strategic genius of Napoleon himself. As we gaze upon this image from Heritage Images' Historica Graphica Collection, we are transported back to that fateful day in Jena where nations clashed and destinies were decided. It serves as a powerful reminder of both the horrors and triumphs that occur within war-torn landscapes like Thuringia.
