On the bank of the Katun River near the village of Tavdy, 1895. Creator: Vasilii Vasilevich Sapozhnikov
On the bank of the Katun River near the village of Tavdy, 1895. From a collection of 60 photos by V.V. Sapozhnikov (1861-1924), a geographer, botanist, ethnographer, and professor at Tomsk State University (the first institution of higher education established in Siberia), who made significant contributions to the study of the South Siberian region. The photographs were taken during his expeditions to the Altai Mountains in 1895-99 and later reproduced from his negatives for the Altai State Regional Studies Museum in Barnaul. The collection is unique for its complex and spectacular views, covering a variety of geographic features of the South Siberian region. In many of the photos, Sapozhnikov or other members of the expeditions are shown, struggling with difficult terrain and swollen rivers. Sapozhnikov's scientific activity was closely connected with the Russian Geographical Society, to which he was elected in 1898

On the Bank of the Katun River near the Village of Tavdy, 1895
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photograph taken by renowned Russian explorer, geographer, botanist, and ethnographer, Vasilii Vasilevich Sapozhnikov. This image is a part of a collection of 60 photographs documenting Sapozhnikov's expeditions to the Altai Mountains between 1895 and 1899. The collection, now housed at the Altai State Regional Studies Museum in Barnaul, offers a unique and comprehensive perspective of the South Siberian region's diverse geographic features. In this particular photograph, the Katun River, with its swollen waters, meanders through the landscape, reflecting the pristine beauty of the surrounding mountains. The village of Tavdy, nestled on the riverbank, is a testament to the resilience of human settlement in the face of nature's challenges. Sapozhnikov's presence in the scene, with his expedition team, underscores the spirit of exploration and scientific discovery that characterized his work. Sapozhnikov's scientific endeavors were closely linked to the Russian Geographical Society, to which he was elected in 1898. His contributions to the study of the South Siberian region were significant, and his photographs serve as a valuable record of a time when the natural world was still largely unexplored. The photograph's intricate details, from the textures of the riverbank to the expressions on the faces of the expedition members, offer a glimpse into the past and the rich history of Siberia.
