The Atlantic Telegraph - A bad look out for Despotism, 1858

The Atlantic Telegraph - A bad look out for Despotism, 1858. John Bull calling to Jonathan Hold fast, Jonathan. Jonathan replying All right, Johnny. John Bull, at Velentia Bay on the west coast of Ireland, and Jonathan at Trinity Bay in Newfoundland on the east coast of America, each pull on their end of the first transatlantic cable. As the cable is pulled taut, Neptune is sent overboard. Despotism is under threat due to the increased speed of communication. This was a project jointly funded by Britain and America. The work had been carried out by the Atlantic Telegraph Company. Manufacture of the cable began in early 1857 and was completed in June 1857. The cable was taken aboard two naval vessels detailed for the task by their respective governments - the American Niagara and the British Agamemnon. At the fifth attempt the two ships reached their destinations and the two continents were finally joined on 5th August 1858 starting at Valentia Harbour in Ireland. Unfortunately, tests were carried out on the cable at the incorrect voltage, and within three weeks the damage had caused the cable to fail. From Punch, or the London Charivari, August 21, 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a significant moment in history. The image depicts John Bull, representing Britain, and Jonathan, symbolizing America, working together to lay the first transatlantic cable. As they pull on their respective ends of the cable from Velentia Bay in Ireland and Trinity Bay in Newfoundland, Neptune is sent overboard. This action signifies the threat posed to despotism by the increased speed of communication. The joint funding and collaboration between Britain and America highlight the importance of this project. The Atlantic Telegraph Company played a crucial role in manufacturing the cable which began in early 1857 and was completed by June of that year. Two naval vessels, the American Niagara and British Agamemnon were assigned for this task. After several failed attempts, both ships successfully reached their destinations on August 5th, 1858 at Valentia Harbour in Ireland. However, due to incorrect voltage tests carried out on the cable within three weeks after its completion led to its failure. This historical event marked a turning point as it demonstrated how improved communication could challenge despotism's control over information flow. It paved the way for future advancements in global connectivity. The photograph serves as a reminder of human ingenuity and determination while also highlighting how technological progress can have far-reaching implications beyond commercial use or economic benefits.
