Astrology (from the Tarocchi, series C: Liberal Arts, #29), before 1467
Astrology (from the Tarocchi, series C: Liberal Arts, #29), before 1467. Conceptually, the liberal arts descended from classical antiquity, and represented knowledge or skills considered necessary to participate in a free society. These four personifications of liberal arts are from a set of 50 engravings depicting philosophical concepts and elements of the world. Although they are called Tarocchi, the prints differ from traditional tarot cards in that they were more likely devised by a humanist scholar for educational purposes. Philosophy appears as Athena, goddess of war and wisdom; her shield bearing Medusas head could turn any opponent into stone. Poetry sits crowned with a laurel wreath next to a Greek Castalian font, believed by poets to be a source of inspiration

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Astrology (from the Tarocchi, series C: Liberal Arts, #29), before 1467" a piece of art that symbolizes the importance of knowledge and skills in a free society. The concept of liberal arts originated from classical antiquity and encompassed various disciplines necessary for intellectual growth. In this particular artwork, we witness four personifications representing different liberal arts. The prints, known as Tarocchi, were not traditional tarot cards but rather educational tools designed by a humanist scholar. Each engraving aimed to depict philosophical concepts and elements of the world. Philosophy is embodied by Athena, the goddess of war and wisdom. Her shield bears Medusa's head, capable of turning any opponent into stone—a powerful metaphor for her intellect. Poetry takes its place beside Athena with a laurel wreath adorning its crown. Positioned next to a Greek Castalian font believed to be an inspiration source for poets, it signifies the profound impact poetry has on our lives. Created during the 15th century in Ferrara, Italy by an artist known as Master of the E Series Tarocchi Italian, this hand-colored engraving incorporates gold accents that add richness to its visual appeal. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care, this print invites us to appreciate both the historical significance and artistic beauty captured within this remarkable piece from centuries past.
