The Apocalypse: Four Angels Holding Back the Winds, 1546-1556. Creator: Jean Duvet (French
The Apocalypse: Four Angels Holding Back the Winds, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jean Duvet's masterpiece, "The Apocalypse: Four Angels Holding Back the Winds" created between 1546 and 1556. As part of a bound volume illustrating the narrative of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation, this print is a rare gem among art collectors. Only seven complete sets are known to exist, making it an invaluable piece. Jean Duvet, one of France's earliest prominent printmakers and an exceptionally innovative artist during the 16th century, dedicated several years to crafting this series of engravings. Considered his greatest artistic achievement, these works demonstrate his mastery in capturing intricate details and conveying profound emotions. Duvet drew inspiration from Italian art through prints by Marcantonio Raimondi that circulated during his time in Langres—a provincial city where he primarily worked. The influence of Italian High Renaissance can be seen in his meticulously sculpted human figures. However, Duvet developed a distinctive style characterized by crowded compositions that disregard rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns. This particular photograph was captured by Heritage Art/Heritage Images—an organization renowned for preserving and showcasing historical artworks with utmost care and precision.
