Antiphonary: Initial A, Resurrection, c. 1470-1480. Creator: Girolamo da Cremona (Italian)
Antiphonary: Initial A, Resurrection, c. 1470-1480. The initial A with the resurrected Christ, shown here, was painted by an immediate follower of Girolamo da Cremona, who was likely working in Siena using the masters designs. Girolamo was intermittently active until 1474 in Siena, where he decorated choir books for the cathedral in collaboration with other North Italian illuminators. Antiphonaries like this one were usually made in several volumes for use by a clerical congregation. They were applied to the singing of the Daily Office, the cycle of daily devotions throughout the year. The chant introduced by this initial reads: Angelus Domini descendit de celo... (An angel of the Lord descended...). It is the First Matins Response for Easter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of an Antiphonary, specifically highlighting the initial A depicting the Resurrection. Created by Girolamo da Cremona, an Italian artist from the 15th century, this particular piece was likely painted by one of his immediate followers in Siena. The Antiphonary itself is a significant religious manuscript that would have been used by a clerical congregation during their daily devotions. The stunning gold and ink on parchment composition brings to life the resurrected Christ within the initial A. This illuminating artwork perfectly captures the essence of Easter with its intricate details and vibrant colors. The chant introduced by this initial reads "Angelus Domini descendit de celo. . " which translates to "An angel of the Lord descended. . . ". It serves as a powerful reminder of Christ's resurrection and holds great significance within Christian liturgy. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable piece represents both historical and artistic importance. Its delicate craftsmanship reflects not only Girolamo da Cremona's influence but also highlights collaboration with other North Italian illuminators during that era. As we admire this photo print, we are transported back in time to witness a momentous scene from centuries ago – a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with faith and devotion.
