EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the elegant Anne Hyde, Duchess of York, a prominent figure in British history. Created by S Freeman in 1825, this engraving beautifully captures her regal presence. Anne Hyde was not only the first wife of King James II of England but also the mother of two queens: Mary II and Queen Anne. Her significance lies not only in her royal connections but also in the fact that after her, no other Englishwoman would marry an heir presumptive or heir apparent to the British throne until Lady Diana Spencer's marriage to Prince Charles in 1981. In this portrait, Anne exudes confidence as she gazes directly at the viewer. The artist skillfully portrays her refined features and dignified demeanor. It is evident that she possessed both beauty and grace befitting a queen consort. The monochrome aesthetic adds a sense of timelessness to this nineteenth-century artwork. As we admire this print today, we are transported back to an era when royalty held immense power and influence over Great Britain. This remarkable piece is part of "Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain" by Edmund Lodge, published by Harding and Lepard in London. It serves as a testament to Anne Hyde's place among notable figures who shaped British history.
