Admiral Somers runs his ship ashore, Bermuda, 1609 (c1880)

Admiral Somers runs his ship ashore, Bermuda, 1609 (c1880). Admiral Sir Geirge Somers (1554-1610) was the founder of the English colony of Bermuda. In 1609 he was placed in command of a fleet of seven ships carrying settlers and supplies for the colony of Jamestown, Virginia. The ships were scattered by a hurricane, and Somers deliberately ran his ship, the Sea Venture, aground to prevent her from foundering. All 150 people and one dog aboard survived the ordeal. The events are said to have inspired Shakespeares play The Tempest. A print from Cassells History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume I, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - Admiral Sir George Somers running his ship ashore in Bermuda in 1609. As the founder of the English colony of Bermuda, Somers played a crucial role in colonisation during the 17th century. In this image, we witness the perilous aftermath of a hurricane that scattered his fleet of seven ships bound for Jamestown, Virginia. With great courage and determination, Somers deliberately ran his ship, the Sea Venture, aground to save it from sinking. Miraculously, all 150 people on board, along with one loyal dog companion, survived this harrowing ordeal. The events depicted here are said to have inspired Shakespeare's renowned play "The Tempest" highlighting their historical significance. The stormy seas and dangerous cliffs serve as metaphors for both physical danger and the challenges faced by early explorers. Through this monochrome engraving from Cassells History of the United States by Edmund Ollier (c1880), we can transport ourselves back to this treacherous moment at sea. It reminds us of the bravery and resilience exhibited by those who ventured into unknown territories during times of exploration. This print not only showcases an important historical event but also serves as a reminder of human survival against nature's forces. It is a testament to Admiral Sir George Somers' leadership and unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of his crew amidst adversity.
