EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century woodblock print, titled "The Actors Nakamura Nakazo I as Matsukaze (right), and Ichikawa Komazo I as Yukihira (left), in the Play Kuni no Hana Ono no Itsumoji, Performed at the Nakamura Theater in the Eleventh Month, 1771" transports us back to the vibrant world of Edo period Kabuki theater. Created by renowned artist Katsukawa Shuncho, this piece showcases his mastery of color and expression. In this scene from the play, we witness two talented actors embodying their respective roles with remarkable skill. On the right stands Nakamura Nakazo I as Matsukaze, a female character portrayed by a male actor known as an onnagata. His delicate facial expressions and graceful posture capture both vulnerability and strength. On the left is Ichikawa Komazo I as Yukihira, exuding confidence through his bold grimace. The intricate details of their costumes and accessories add depth to their characters' identities. The comb adorning Matsukaze's hair symbolizes her femininity while also serving as a reminder of her tragic fate. The richly colored robes worn by both actors reflect their social status within feudal Japan. As we admire this print at the Art Institute Chicago's Asian art gallery, we are transported into a world where gender boundaries blur and emotions come alive on stage. This artwork serves not only as a testament to Katsukawa Shuncho's artistic prowess but also highlights Kabuki theater's enduring legacy in Japanese culture.
