EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment from Act one of the renowned play "Thermidor" by Victorien Sardou, performed in 1891. The artist behind this masterpiece is Henri Meyer, who skillfully brings to life the dramatic scene on stage. However, unlike the popularity of Lobster Thermidor, a dish created four years later to celebrate the play's opening at Marie s restaurant near Comedie Francaise theatre in Paris, the play itself did not receive critical acclaim and remains rarely performed. The image showcases a picturesque riverbank setting with a rowing boat gliding gracefully on calm waters. A charming bridge stands tall in the background while lush green trees and plants adorn both sides of the river. In this historical context of Napoleonic France, men dressed in military attire engage in animated conversation as they gesture passionately with their hands. The photograph beautifully captures both nature's tranquility and human drama intertwined within its frame. It transports us back to the 19th century when such scenes were common along French riversides. This print serves as an exquisite reminder of an era long gone but preserved through art media like this one by Meyer.
