EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraved portrait captures Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778-1868), an influential English politician, lawyer, and statesman who served as Lord Chancellor of England and Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh. The image was published in 1860 during Brougham's tenure as Chancellor of Edinburgh, marking a significant period in his illustrious career. Born on February 17, 1778, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Brougham was educated at the University of Edinburgh and the Inner Temple in London. He was called to the bar in 1800 and quickly rose through the ranks of English politics, becoming a Member of Parliament in 1807. Brougham's political beliefs were rooted in liberalism, and he advocated for various reforms, including the abolition of the slave trade, the reform of the House of Lords, and the extension of the franchise. He also played a crucial role in the passage of the Reform Act of 1832, which expanded the electorate and paved the way for greater political representation. In 1830, Brougham was appointed Lord Chancellor of England, a position he held until 1834. During his tenure, he worked to modernize the legal system and improve access to justice. He also established the Office of the Solicitor General for Scotland and the Faculty of Advocates Library in Edinburgh. Brougham's impact on Scottish education was equally significant. He was appointed Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh in 1859, and during his time in office, he worked to improve the university's infrastructure and academic programs. He also established the Brougham Scholarships, which provided financial assistance to deserving students. Brougham passed away on May 14, 1868, leaving behind a rich legacy as a reformer, statesman, and advocate for education. This engraved portrait serves as a testament to his enduring influence on British history.
