EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a serene moment in the picturesque Swanpool of Falmouth, Cornwall, around 1925. Originally the swannery of the esteemed Killigrews, this tranquil sanctuary is home to a group of mute swans gracefully gliding across the still waters. The glass lantern slide was part of an enthralling lecture titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" presented by Major Arthur William Gill - a renowned Cornishman and passionate amateur photographer. During the 1920s and 1930s, Major Gill captivated audiences with his presentations of both still photographs and cine films. His expertise extended beyond Cornwall as he shared his visual treasures with prestigious groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and even the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides that Major Gill captured prolifically were not only remarkable for their vivid colors but also for their artistic touch. Each slide was meticulously hand-painted by Major Gill himself, resulting in breathtakingly beautiful images that left viewers in awe. In this particular photograph, we witness nature's splendor at its finest - a harmonious blend of vibrant hues reflected on the lake's surface while these majestic birds bask in tranquility. This image serves as a testament to both Major Arthur William Gill's exceptional talent behind the lens and his dedication to preserving Cornwall's natural wonders for generations to come.
