Black Sea Region - north-eastern Turkey. Known to the Ancient Greeks as Choerades or Phamacia and later as Kerasous or Cerasus ( horn for peninsula). The English word cherry, French cherise, Spanish cereza, southern Italian dialect cerasa - all come from the classical greek for cherry which has been identified with Cerasus. The cherry was first exported to Europe from Cerasus in Roman times
