EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the manufacture of the formidable German Paris Gun at the Krupp factory during World War 1. The Paris Gun, also known as the Emperor William Gun, was a long-range siege weapon designed and manufactured by the renowned German industrial giant, Krupp. This powerful artillery piece was a game-changer towards the end of the war, with a remarkable range that could reach up to 130 kilometers (81 miles). First fired from the forest of Coucy on 21 March 1918, the Paris Gun made its presence known across the city of Paris with a deafening explosion. Over the following months, approximately 300 shells were fired between March and August, with an average rate of about 20 per day. The Paris Gun's impact on the war was significant, as it disrupted supply lines, morale, and caused widespread panic among the French population. The image before you, captured around 1917, provides a rare look into the production process of this impressive weapon. The workers in the Krupp factory are seen meticulously assembling the various components, demonstrating the intricate engineering and precision required to manufacture such a formidable piece of military technology. The Paris Gun stands as a testament to the ingenuity and industrial might of the German war effort during World War 1.
