EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stern and resolute visage of General Sir John Eccles Nixon (1857-1921), a pivotal figure in the history of the British Indian Army during World War I. As a senior commander, Nixon played a critical role in the planning and execution of the first British expedition against Baghdad in 1915. Born in 1857, Nixon joined the Indian Military Service in 1877, and rose through the ranks to become a Lieutenant-General in 1913. His military career was marked by distinguished service in various campaigns, including the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Punjab Disturbances. However, Nixon's most notable achievement, and also his greatest misfortune, was his role in the disastrous first British expedition against Baghdad. Ordered by the British government to capture the city from the Ottoman Turks, Nixon led the invasion force of 20,000 men, which included Indian and British troops. The campaign was fraught with logistical difficulties, and the British forces were ultimately repelled by the Ottoman defenders. The failure of the expedition had far-reaching consequences, both for the British military and for the region as a whole. It marked the end of the British dream of a quick and easy victory in the Middle East, and paved the way for the eventual entry of the Ottoman Empire into the war on the side of the Central Powers. Despite the ultimate failure of the expedition, Nixon's leadership and determination were not called into question. He continued to serve in various capacities in the Indian Army until his retirement in 1919. This photograph, taken during his later years, captures the indomitable spirit of a man who played a significant role in shaping the course of history during a tumultuous period.
