EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking black and white portrait captures the stern yet focused gaze of Major General Sir Frederick Cuthbert Poole (1869-1936), a distinguished British army officer who served with great honor and valor during the Second Boer War and the First World War. Poole joined the Royal Artillery in 1889, and rose through the ranks to become a major general. He is depicted here in his full dress uniform, adorned with the ribbons of several decorations he received for his military achievements. The ribbons on his chest tell the story of his illustrious military career. From left to right, they include the Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB), the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), and the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). Poole's most notable decoration, however, is the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KBE), which he received in 1918 for his exceptional service during World War 1. Poole's military career began in earnest during the Second Boer War, where he served as a battery commander and was mentioned in dispatches for his bravery. He continued to serve with distinction during World War 1, where he commanded the 1st Brigade, Royal Artillery, and was instrumental in the capture of Messines Ridge in 1917. His leadership and strategic acumen proved invaluable in the face of the formidable German defenses. This powerful image of Sir Frederick Poole, with his stern expression and impeccably tailored uniform, serves as a testament to the courage and determination of the British soldiers who fought in the Great Wars. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men and women, and the enduring legacy of their service to their country.
