EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite amidst the chaos and destruction of the Gallipoli Campaign during the First World War. General Henri Gouraud (right), Commander of the French Army Corps, and General Maurice Camille Bailloud (left), Commander of the French Army 2nd Division, are seen here in the ruins of the Old Fort at Sedd el Bahr on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. The date is estimated to be around 1915. The two generals, both dressed in their full military regalia, are seen smiling and seemingly at ease as they examine a wrecked gun amidst the ruins. The fort, once a formidable defensive structure, now lies in ruins, a testament to the devastating impact of the war. The Old Fort at Sedd el Bahr was a key strategic position during the Gallipoli Campaign, and its capture was seen as a vital step towards securing a victory for the Allied forces. However, the campaign ultimately proved to be a costly and unsuccessful endeavor, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Despite the grim circumstances, the photograph captures a brief moment of camaraderie and determination between two senior military officers as they survey the battlefield.
