The St. Bernard is a breed of large working dog from the Swiss Alps and northern Italy, originally bred for rescue and as a guard dog. The breed is known for its intelligence, strength, loyalty, and gentle nature, and is also recognized for its iconic barrel-shaped chest and long fur coat that can be either smooth or rough in texture. The St. Bernard has been used in search-and-rescue operations since the 18th century due to its remarkable sense of smell and ability to traverse difficult terrain with ease. Today, the breed is still used as a rescue dog in some parts of Europe but it is more commonly kept as a pet or show dog due to its friendly disposition towards humans. The St Bernard stands between 25–30 inches tall at the shoulder and can weigh up to 180 pounds when fully grown; males are typically larger than females. Its coat comes in various colors including red & white, brindle & white, black & white or tan & white; all have black masks on their faces with distinctive markings around their eyes that give them an alert expression. This breed requires regular grooming including brushing several times per week to keep their coats healthy and free from tangles or mats; they also need plenty of exercise each day such as long walks or playtime in order to stay fit and happy.
