Large Size Panoramic View Of Matera, Third Oldest City In The World And UNESCO World Heritage Site

Large size panoramic view of the three different ages of Matera, considered the third oldest city in the world after Jericho and Aleppo, being inhabited continuously from the stone age to nowadays. World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1993. The modern city has been built on top of the canyon (Gravina di Matera), over the famous Sassi di Matera, rock dwellings inhabited until the fifties of the twentieth century. The opposite side of the canyon has numerous prehistoric cave dwellings carved into the soft tufa stone. In this image the three different kind of dwellings are all visible.
