"The Scramble for Africa: A Tale of Conquest, Resistance, and Exploration" In the late 19th century, Europe witnessed a feverish race to claim territories in Africa, known as the "Scramble for Africa. " This captivating period saw major historical events unfold, leaving an indelible mark on both continents. One such event was the arrival of Major Marchand at Toulon. The image captures his triumphant return after successfully establishing French presence in Sudan. His mission exemplified the belief in "La mission civilisatrice, " or the Civilizing Mission - a notion that European powers had a duty to bring progress and enlightenment to African lands.
