"Scorched Earth" - a tactic of war and conquest, infamously employed throughout history. From Sherman's March to the Sea during the American Civil War, where plantations were plundered and set ablaze (EVCW2A-00145), to the Red Army's ruthless destruction of cities during the Russian Civil War (The Reds continue their barbaric tactic of destroying cities rather than abandoning them to the nationals, colour litho), this strategy has left a trail of devastation. In Malaya, the British pursued a "Scorched Earth" policy during the Malayan Emergency, leaving a path of destruction in their wake (Britain pursues "Scorched Earth" policy). Major-General Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, notorious for his brutal tactics in the Sudan, led the charge in 1900 (Creator: Bassano Ltd). The destruction of Polish villages during the aftermath of World War I is another grim reminder of this tactic (The Destruction of a Polish Village, Creator: Unknown). The Germans employed "Scorched Earth" during their invasion of Russia in Operation Barbarossa (Spreading fire in Jucourica Operation Barbarossa - German Invasion of Russia, 1941 - 15th Infantary Division), leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The Namib Desert in Africa, with its scorching sand dunes (Africa, Namibia, Namib Desert. Crest of Sand Dune), and the Table Mountains casting long shadows over a parched land (Africa, Namibia, Damaraland. After a scorching day the sun sets over the Table Mountains), serves as a haunting reminder of the devastation left behind by this brutal tactic.
