EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in American history - Sherman's March to the Sea during the American Civil War. Taken by Albert Bobbett, it showcases Unionist Major General William Tecumseh Sherman's men sabotaging a railway as part of their military campaign. The image is an engraving from "Our Country: a Household History for All Readers" by Benson J. Lossing, published in 1878. Sherman's forces implemented a scorched earth policy between November and December 1864, systematically destroying military targets, industry, infrastructure, and disrupting Confederate transport networks. This relentless operation played a crucial role in breaking the back of the Confederacy and ultimately led to its surrender. In this scene depicted by Bobbett's lens, we witness armed soldiers on horseback strategically damaging railway tracks with pickaxes. The determination etched on their faces reflects their commitment to carrying out Sherman's orders. Amidst the destruction lies an animal companion - perhaps symbolizing both the chaos of war and humanity's connection to nature amidst turmoil. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this historic moment frozen in time while highlighting the gravity of these events that shaped America forever. As we gaze upon this powerful image captured over a century ago, we are reminded of the sacrifices made during one of our nation's most defining conflicts – an enduring testament to courage and resilience against all odds.
