Pygoscelis papua, commonly known as the Gentoo Penguin, is a species of penguin found in the Antarctic and Subantarctic regions, and is one of three species of crested penguins, along with the Chinstrap and Adelie Penguins. The Gentoo Penguin is easily identified by its bright orange-red bill and white patches on either side of its head. It stands about 70 cm tall and weighs between 3-5 kg. Gentoo Penguins feed mainly on krill, fish, squid, and other crustaceans that they catch while swimming underwater and are known to eat eggs from other seabirds such as petrels or skuas if they can find them. They breed in large colonies on rocky shores or islands near the Antarctic coast during summer months when there is plenty of food available for them to feed their chicks. The female lays two eggs which are incubated by both parents for around 35 days before hatching. After hatching both parents take turns caring for the chicks until they fledge at around 75 days old when they become independent from their parents and start to look after themselves. The Gentoo Penguin population has been declining due to climate change causing a decrease in sea ice which affects their food supply as well as human activities such as overfishing which reduces their prey availability even further.
