Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish Baroque painter who lived from 1577 to 1640. He is widely considered to be one of the most important and influential artists of his time, and his works are renowned for their dynamic compositions, vivid colors, and grandiose themes. Rubens was born in Siegen, Germany but moved to Antwerp at the age of 14 where he studied under several prominent painters including Otto van Veen. He quickly developed a style that combined elements from both Northern Renaissance painting as well as Italian Mannerism. His works often depicted religious or mythological scenes with an emphasis on movement and emotion. In addition to painting, Rubens also worked as an art diplomat for the Spanish court in Brussels and later became court painter for Archduke Albert VII of Austria in 1609. During this period he created many large-scale altarpieces which were highly sought after by patrons throughout Europe. After his death in 1640, Rubens's influence continued to be felt throughout Europe with many artists such as Anthony van Dyck following in his footsteps.
