Mary Jane Clarke, a prominent member of the Women's Social and Political Union (W. S. P. U), took charge as the organiser of the Princess Mary Hospital Ball in 1922. The event was a delightful affair, with attendees embracing the theme of figures from 1820. Lady Terrington, dressed as Princess Charlotte, stood at the center of a group of revellers who brought history to life through their exquisite costumes. Amongst those present were suffragettes Gladice Keevil Manchester, Adela Pankhurst, and Mary E Gawthorpe - fierce advocates for women's rights who had fought tirelessly for equality. Their presence added an air of empowerment to this glamorous gathering. Notably captured in another photograph is Gordon McLennan accompanied by Susannah York. McLennan was not only known for his political activism but also his affiliation with communism. His dedication to social change made him an intriguing figure amidst this elegant setting. The spirit of revolution continued with John Maclean, a Scottish teacher and revolutionary socialist whose passion for justice resonated throughout his career. His attendance at such events showcased how even within high society circles, voices advocating for societal transformation could find common ground. Julia and Eric Morley also graced this occasion; Julia being well-known as a British TV host while Eric founded the iconic Miss World pageant. Their presence highlighted both entertainment and beauty industries' influence on society during that era. Gordon McLennan appeared once again in subsequent photographs - an unwavering communist activist committed to challenging established norms and fighting against inequality wherever he saw it.
