The organisers of the Athens Olympics, 1906, (1936)
The organisers of the Athens Olympics, 1906, (1936). As well as the inaugural games of the modern era in 1896, Athens hosted a further games, known as the Intercalated Games, in 1906. Athens had proposed that it could host the Olympics every four years, but Baron Pierre de Coubertin was opposed to the idea, not least because he wanted Paris to host the 1900 edition. As a compromise, it was decided that Athens would host games every four years in between the main Olympic Games. The 1906 version was a success, partly because unlike 1900 and 1904 it was not tied into an International Exposition and was not staged over a period of several months. However, political tensions in the Balkans caused a cancellation in 1910 and World War I ruled out 1914 and 1918, causing the idea to fall out of favour. The home of the Olympics would have to wait until 2004 to stage another games. A print from Olympia 1936, Die Olympischen Spiele 1936, Volume I, Cigaretten-Bilderdienst, Hamburg, 1936

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the organisers of the Athens Olympics in 1906, a significant event that marked the continuation of the modern Olympic Games. Following the successful inaugural games in 1896, Athens proposed to host the Olympics every four years. However, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a key figure in reviving the ancient sporting event, opposed this idea as he had plans for Paris to host the 1900 edition. As a compromise, it was agreed that Athens would organize games every four years between each main Olympic Games. The 1906 Intercalated Games proved to be a triumph for Athens. Unlike previous editions tied to International Expositions and spanning several months, these games were more focused and standalone. Unfortunately, political tensions in the Balkans led to their cancellation in 1910. World War I further disrupted subsequent editions scheduled for 1914 and 1918. Consequently, this concept of hosting intercalated games fell out of favor. It wasn't until much later that Greece had another opportunity to showcase its rich Olympic heritage when it hosted the Summer Olympics once again in 2004 - an event filled with pride and celebration. This remarkable print from Olympia's collection provides us with a glimpse into history; it immortalizes those who played pivotal roles in organizing one of sports' most prestigious events during its formative years.
