"Military Personnel: Courage and Legacy" From the battlefields of Waterloo to the icy waters of Antarctica, they have left an indelible mark on history. Scotland for Ever. The charge of the Scots Greys at Waterloo on 18 June 1815 stands as a testament to their unwavering bravery in the face of adversity. Major John Rouse Merriott Chard, VC, earned his place in history during the Zulu War. His leadership and heroism were celebrated by the crew of HMS Vindictive after their successful raid on Zeebrugge on 23 April 1918. Field Marshal Lord Roberts commanded forces in South Africa with distinction, leaving an enduring legacy. Artist Lafayette captured his commanding presence in a portrait that exudes authority and strength. Napoleon Bonaparte, a French general turned Emperor, forever altered Europe's political landscape. In 1912, his image still evoked awe and fascination among military enthusiasts. The pipers of the 1st Scots Guards showcased not only their musical talents but also their dedication to duty in Gregory & Co's timeless depiction from 1896. The Siege of Yorktown in 1781 was immortalized by artist Auguste Couder's brush strokes. It serves as a reminder that victory often comes through perseverance against all odds. Charles George Gordon, known as Chinese Gordon due to his service overseas, exemplified valor and selflessness throughout his career. His name became synonymous with courage under fire. Admiral Teddy Evans sailed into history books both as a British naval officer and Antarctic explorer. In 1916, he stood tall amidst icy landscapes while embodying determination and resilience. Training ship HMS Lion nurtured future sailors who would proudly serve their nation. WM Crockett's artwork from Devonport captures both camaraderie amongst sailor lads and devotion to duty aboard this vessel in 1896.
