King penguins are the second largest species of penguin, standing at up to 3.9 feet tall and weighing up to 35 pounds. They have a black head, neck, and back with a white chest and bright orange-yellow patches on either side of their head. King penguins live in large colonies on sub-Antarctic islands in the Southern Hemisphere, such as South Georgia Island, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands and Macquarie Island. They feed mainly on small fish like lanternfish or squid that they catch near the surface of the water while swimming. King Penguins breed during the summer months when temperatures are milder than during winter months when they migrate further north for food. They lay one egg at a time which is incubated by both parents for 55 days before hatching into a fluffy gray chick that will be ready to go out to sea after about three months old.
