"Hops: A Celebration of Tradition and Togetherness" In the heart of Murraygate, Dundee, a vibrant celebration of the Jute Industry unfolds. Amidst the laughter and joy, tales are shared about a time when hop pickers gathered on farms near Paddock Wood in Kent. On that memorable 9th September, their united spirits painted an enchanting picture. F. C. Twort's poignant words transport us to his cherished memory of a hop field - where nature's bounty intertwined with hard work and camaraderie. The 1950s witnessed families young and old picking hops by the binful, creating lasting memories etched in time. Kent became synonymous with hop picking as generations flocked to its Boughton District fields. With every hoist at Maplescombe Farm in Farningham during 1938, dreams were nurtured amidst golden clusters hanging from towering poles. East Peckham echoed with youthful vigor as both young and old immersed themselves in the laborious yet rewarding task of hop picking on that unforgettable day - September 1st, 1938. Newington, Kent stands proud as witness to countless stories woven within its fabric; CGH01_01_0651 captures moments frozen for eternity - women hop pickers standing tall against adversity with gas masks over their shoulders. And so it goes – Kent Hop Pickers forever etching their mark upon history's tapestry. In Beltring, each worker embodies resilience while carrying not just baskets but also gas masks – symbolizing strength amidst uncertainty. Hops transcend mere crops; they embody tradition passed down through generations – a testament to unity forged through hard work under sun-kissed skies or rain-soaked fields alike. From Murraygate to Paddock Wood; from Farningham to East Peckham; these humble cones have brought communities together like no other harvest can.
