Gregor Mendel. Computer artwork of the Austrian botanist Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884) with a pea plant, DNA strand (orange) and sequence of genetic code (pink). Mendel discovered the basic laws of genetic heredity. He became an Augustinian monk in 1843, studied science in Vienna, Austria, during 1851-3 and became an Abbot in 1868. During 1856-63 he bred pea plants (Pisum sp.) in his monastery garden. By crossing various pea strains he demonstrated that certain traits were inherited from the parent plants in a predictable way. He is considered to be the founder of genetics. Inherited traits are now known to be carried on DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) as the genetic code

DNA. Computer model of part of a molecule of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is the molecule that controls the growth and development of all living things. Atoms are shown as balls, and are colour- coded: carbon (pink), oxygen (green), phosphorous (orange), nitrogen (blue) and hydrogen (white). The DNA molecule comprises two sugar-phosphate strands spiralling around each other (the double helix), linked by the interactions between pairs of bases along their length. The sequence of these bases along the DNA strands determines an organism's unique genetic code. Human DNA contains around 3 billion base pairs, grouped into sections (genes) controlling a specific function

DNA research. DNA autoradiogram used for finding the base sequence of a segment of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is the molecule that controls the growth and development of all living things. It carries information in the form of genes, specific lengths of DNA that form recipes for body proteins. Genetic information is stored in the sequence in which four bases (adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine) are arranged along the DNA molecule. The dark bands represent the position of the bases on DNA. Every individual has a slightly different genetic code. Genetic fingerprinting such as this is used extensively in medicine, forensic science and paternity studies
