Flower of the chickweed Featured Print

Flower of the chickweed

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the flower of common chickweed, Stellaria media, a self- pollinating plant found on uncultivated ground in Europe. In the background are the five sepals or calyx (green), which serve a protective function. Next are the 5 notched petals or corolla (yellow), which attract insects by their bright colour. Calyx & corolla together form the perianth. Three stamens topped by pollen-bearing anthers (male organs) lie between the petals & the capsule. At centre are the tufts of the stigmas (female organs) supported on stalks called styles. These connect the pollen-receiving stigmas with the ovary. Magnification: x5 at 6x4.5cm size

Stigmas of a Garden Rose flower Featured Print

Stigmas of a Garden Rose flower

Rose stigmas. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of several stigmas in a Garden Rose flower, Rosa sp. The stigmas, with their numerous projections, form the free end of the carpel, the flower's female reproductive organ. They are each joined to the ovaries at the base of the carpel by a stalk-like style (also seen). Pollen grains coming into contact with the projections on the stigma may germinate & produce a tube that grows down the style & into the ovaries, which contain the female eggs. The male gamete contained in the pollen grain passes down the pollen tube and into the ovary, where fertilisation occurs to form a seed. Magnification: x36 at 5x7 cm size. Magnification: x90 at 12x16cm size

Lily bud pistil and anthers, LM

Lily bud. Light micrograph of a cross-section through an immature lily bud (Lilium sp.), showing the male and female reproductive organs of the flower. The pistil (centre) is made up of three fused leaves, the edges of which curl inwards and bear the placentas (dark red), which in turn house the ovules and their ova (female sex cells, not seen). Surrounding the pistil are six male anthers, each of which have four pollen sacs filled with developing pollen grains, or male sex cells (pink spots). Magnification: x100 when printed 10 centimetres wide
