Flightless birds are a group of birds that have lost the ability to fly due to natural selection. These birds are found on every continent except Antarctica, and include species such as ostriches, emus, kiwis, rheas, cassowaries and penguins. They have several adaptations that help them survive in their environment without the ability to fly. These adaptations include strong legs for running and swimming; large wings for balance while running; dense feathers for insulation; powerful beaks for cracking open food items; and sharp claws for defense against predators. It also tend to be larger than their flying counterparts due to their lack of need to conserve energy by flying. Despite these advantages, flightless birds face many challenges in the wild including predation from other animals and competition with other species for food resources. Conservation efforts are underway in many parts of the world in order protect flightless bird populations from further decline.
