Flemish art is a style of painting and sculpture that originated in the Southern Netherlands during the 15th century, and is characterized by its realism, attention to detail, and use of bright colors. Flemish artists were known for their skill in depicting everyday life, religious scenes, and portraits. They often used oil on canvas or panel as their medium. Notable Flemish painters include Jan van Eyck, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens and David Teniers the Younger. Flemish art has had a lasting influence on European painting styles up to modern times. Its influence can be seen in works by many famous painters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer from Holland; Velázquez from Spain; Watteau from France; Gainsborough from England; and Copley from America.
