The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. The islands have a population of approximately 3,000 people and are home to two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland. They were first discovered by Europeans in 1592 and have been under British control since 1833. The economy is largely based on fishing, tourism, sheep farming and oil exploration. In 1982 Argentina invaded the islands but were defeated by British forces after 74 days of fighting. Today the islanders remain fiercely loyal to Britain with a strong sense of identity and culture that is distinct from both Argentina and Britain. Despite ongoing tensions between Argentina and Britain over sovereignty of the Islands, they remain an important part of British Overseas Territories with their own government responsible for internal affairs while foreign relations remain under UK control.
