The European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) is a small passerine bird that is native to Europe, parts of Asia and North Africa and has a distinctive red breast and face, grey back and wings, and a white belly, and is usually found in woodlands, gardens, parks and hedgerows. The European Robin feeds mainly on insects such as beetles, caterpillars and spiders but will also eat fruit during the winter months when food is scarce, and are territorial birds that defend their territories from other robins with song or physical contact. They build nests in tree cavities or walls using grasses, mosses and feathers to line the nest. The female lays 4-5 eggs which hatch after 13-14 days of incubation by both parents. The chicks fledge after 14 days but remain dependent on their parents for several weeks afterwards until they become independent enough to survive on their own.
