The Stone Fleet sailed from New Bedford harbor on November 16, 1861. To stop the blockade runners in and out of the Southern ports at the beginning of the Civil War, the Navy Department decided to sink ships laden with stones in the narrow channels. New Bedford, Massachusetts, furnished 24 vessels of the 45 sought by the government. The men (pictured in this photograph) were the captains of the Stone Fleet vessels.
