In the American Civil War (1861-1865), there was very heavy fighting near Richmond, Virginia, between June 26 and July 2, 1862. Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved to cut off Union general McClellan from his base at White House Landing. The Union forces fell back to Gaines's Mill and after heavy fighting, the Confederates won the battle there on June 27. The scene in this painting shows the cavalry charge of the 5th regulars in the Union Army at Gaines's Mill.
