According to Greek and Roman mythology, the Trojan Laocoon warned his fellow Trojans not to bring the giant wooden horse, gifted to them by the Greeks, within the walls of troy. Poseidon, the god of the sea and a deity who favored the Greeks, sent sea-serpents from the sea to strangle Laocoon. The horse was the Greek hero Odysseus idea and the Greeks had a Greek named Sinon tell the Trojans that if the Trojans did not bring it within the city walls, the Greeks would defeat the Trojans. This early 1900s illustration shows the Trojans reveling in the thought that the horse was about to bring them victory in the long war. But, the result was very different. The Greek soldiers hidden within the horse crept out that night and defeated the Trojans and burned Troy.
