Asgard was Childerss last, and most famous, yacht: in June 1914 he used it to smuggle a cargo of 900 elderly but serviceable Mauser Model 1871 rifles and 29, 000 black powder cartridges to the Irish Volunteers movement at the fishing village of Howth, County Dublin (later known as the " Howth gun-running" ). It was acquired by the Irish government as a sail training vessel in 1961, stored on dry land in the yard of Kilmainham Gaol in 1979, and finally became a static exhibit at The National Museum of Ireland in 2012.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history during the European pre-war July Crisis of 1914. On 26 July, amidst this tense period, Erskine Childers sailed into Howth on his own yacht, the Asgard. The vessel carried an astonishing cargo of 900 rifles and 14,000 rounds of ammunition that had been supplied from Germany by a representative of the Irish Volunteers. The ammunition box is clearly marked with its origin in Hamburg. In this image, we see Childers confidently at the wheel of his beloved yacht, accompanied by Gordon Shepherd (?). The Asgard holds great significance as it was not only Childers' last yacht but also became famous for its involvement in what would later be known as the "Howth gun-running". In June 1914, he used this very vessel to smuggle a shipment of elderly yet functional Mauser Model 1871 rifles and black powder cartridges to support the Irish Volunteers movement based in Howth, County Dublin. Over time, the Asgard transitioned from being a symbol of rebellion to becoming an important part of Ireland's maritime heritage. It was acquired by the Irish government as a sail training vessel in 1961 before finding its place as a static exhibit at The National Museum of Ireland in 2012. This powerful photograph serves as both a testament to historical events and an enduring reminder of bravery and determination during turbulent times.
