EDITORS COMMENTS

This photograph, taken in 1895, captures the historic moment as Swindon Station in Wiltshire, England, welcomed its first non-stop express train. For over 55 years, since the opening of the Great Western Railway (GWR) line in 1840, all trains bound for Bristol were required to make a ten-minute stop at Swindon. This tradition allowed passengers to take refreshments and stretch their legs, making it a popular pitstop for travellers. However, with the increasing demand for faster and more efficient transportation, the decision was made to abolish the ten-minute stop at Swindon. The arrival of this non-stop express train marked a significant milestone in railway history, as it signified the beginning of the end of the era of lengthy stops at stations. The image showcases the grandeur of Swindon Station during the 1890s, with its impressive architecture, bustling activity, and the steam-belching locomotive that symbolized the power and might of the railway industry. The station, with its numerous platforms and imposing red-brick buildings, stood proudly as a testament to the engineering prowess of the time. This photograph not only serves as a reminder of the rich railway heritage of Swindon but also highlights the evolution of transportation and the relentless pursuit of progress. As we admire the beauty of this bygone era, we are reminded of the incredible impact that the railway has had on our lives and the way we travel.
