Yeovil Town Station, Somerset, c. 1950s

A bustling scene at Yeovil Town Station taken in the late 1950 s. The chimneys of the large station building can be seen above the platform canopy, and the passenger footbridge which straddled the tracks is visible at the far end of the three platforms. When it first opened in June 1861, the jointly owned station was served by four signal boxes, two station masters houses and two station masters whose joint cooperation must have been essential for the smooth running of the line.
The station closed to passengers in October 1966

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the 1950s showcases the vibrant atmosphere of Yeovil Town Station in Somerset. The bustling scene captures a moment in time when this railway hub was at its peak. Standing proudly above the platform canopy are the chimneys of the grand station building, exuding an air of importance and history. At the far end of the three platforms, we catch a glimpse of the passenger footbridge that gracefully spans across the tracks. This bridge served as a vital connection for travelers, enabling them to seamlessly navigate between trains and platforms. Dating back to June 1861, Yeovil Town Station was jointly owned and boasted four signal boxes along with two station masters' houses. These dedicated individuals worked together tirelessly to ensure smooth operations on this crucial line. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, it is impossible not to ponder upon all those who passed through these very platforms - their stories, dreams, and destinations forever intertwined with this historic location. Sadly, October 1966 marked an end to passenger services at Yeovil Town Station. However, thanks to photographs like these preserved by STEAM Museum of GWR (Great Western Railway), we can still marvel at its former glory and appreciate its significance within Somerset's rich railway heritage.
