Framed Print of Passengers at Paddington Station in 1943

A busy view of Paddington Station from August Bank Holiday 1943. The scene looks relatively dark, with only a few beams of sunlight coming through the roof. Much of the glass roof had been blacked out for air raid precautions. The carriage stood at Platform 4 is also unusually dark. In a circular from 20th April 1942 the GWR noted that there was a shortage in constituents for making cream paint. The new directive was to paint all carriages brown. The chocolate and cream livery that the GWR was famed for was gradually phased out during the war period and only special coaches, such as saloons, Riviera stock and diesel railcars continued to be painted in the two colours.
