EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the powerful presence of Dean Goods No. 2516 as it chugs its way through the Welsh countryside in 1956. Built in 1897 at the Swindon Works of the Great Western Railway (GWR), this 0-6-0 locomotive was once a common sight on the railways of South Wales, pulling heavy loads of coal and goods. The Dean Goods class, of which No. 2516 is a member, was designed by the legendary locomotive engineer, Daniel Gooch, and was named after the Dean Forest Railway, which the GWR had taken over in 1879. With their distinctive vertical boilers and large chimneys, these locomotives were well-suited to the steep gradients and heavy loads of the Welsh valleys. By the 1950s, however, the age of the steam locomotive was coming to an end, and No. 2516, like many of its brethren, was due for retirement. Yet, despite the encroaching modernity of diesel and electric trains, the steam locomotive continued to hold a special place in the hearts of railway enthusiasts. Today, No. 2516 is a cherished member of the Steam Transport and Travel Collection at the STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon. Restored to its former glory, it once again roars to life on the heritage railway, transporting passengers back in time to an era when steam ruled the rails." This photograph not only captures a moment in time but also the enduring appeal of the steam locomotive and its rich history. The image of No. 2516, with its coal-streaked sides and plume of steam, is a testament to the romance and nostalgia that surrounds this iconic mode of transport.
